Are you content in your life?

IMG_5554Contentment – in a state of peaceful happiness

There it is. The goal we are all trying to achieve. Something so simple in words but so complicated in reality, or is it?

Do you think being content is having the newest gadgets? Maybe you think finding romance will make you content. What about scoring the perfect job? Truth is none of this even gets us close. Let’s take a trip on what it means to be content and how to get there.

1. What does it mean to be content?

I think everyone thinks they know what this means… Do they really though? Content isn’t just being happy. It is being full of joy. Without joy then you can never find who you are and become what you are meant to become.

To be without joy is to never truly be happy.

“But isn’t joy the same as happy?” Not at all! Happy is a temporary thing. At some point in your life you are going to go through times where you are not happy. That is life! You can’t always be on the mountaintops. You have to go through the valleys as well. The difference in happiness and joy is that joy is the same no matter where you are. If you are on the mountaintops, joy is there. In the deepest valleys? Joy follows you there too.

Joy never leaves you because joy comes from God. Happiness can come from things you do but joy only comes from knowing that there is a God that has your whole life in His hands and no matter what is going on around you, He knows the outcome. He controls the tide so-to-speak. You are safe.

2. How do I become content?

  • Give control to God – There is nothing as stressful as trying to do life all by yourself. You have got to let go of your future and surrender it to His hand. You know the song ‘Let It Go’. Make that the motto of your life! Quit nitpicking and micromanaging your future because truth is you can’t control it anyway.  (DISCLAIMER* – That does not mean to quit planning your future or to become lazy. It means to co-labor with God’s plan in your life and follow His path for you.)
  • Follow Christ – That is right! If you are going to give Him control than that means you have to follow His lead. Now, your input is greatly appreciated. God wants you to chase after your dreams. He put those in you! Just make sure to keep on track with His plans and gear your plans toward His. Being out of God’s will is the most wearing and agonizing thing you can ever experience. If you are miserable with one of your choices chances are you are not in line with His will. Pray it out and listen.
  • Give up – “WHAT!? GIVE UP!” Yes, I said give up. Give up all the crud you think you want and start looking at the things you actually need. God wants us to be prosperous but is your idea of prosperity the same as His? This seems like a great time to open our Bibles.

4Always be filled with joy in the Lord. I will say it again. Be filled with joy. 5Let everyone see that you are gentle and kind. The Lord is coming soon. 6Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. 7And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds. 8Brothers and sisters, continue to think about what is good and worthy of praise. Think about what is true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected. 9And do what you learned and received from me—what I told you and what you saw me do. And the God who gives peace will be with you. 10I am so happy, and I thank the Lord that you have again shown your care for me. You continued to care about me, but there was no way for you to show it. 11I am telling you this, but not because I need something. I have learned to be satisfied with what I have and with whatever happens. 12I know how to live when I am poor and when I have plenty. I have learned the secret of how to live through any kind of situation—when I have enough to eat or when I am hungry, when I have everything I need or when I have nothing. 13Christ is the one who gives me the strength I need to do whatever I must do. (Philippians 4:4-13 ERV)

Once we give up the mentality that we have to have  ________ (Fill in the blank) to be happy we gain true joy and through that joy we become content.

Join me on this challenge. For one week only focus on being full of joy. Don’t over think all of the bad stuff. Keep your heart set on the goal. If you don’t have a goal this would be a great time to find one and write it down; something long-term. Let’s become content the way Christ has enabled us to be.

Once you fill your life with the proper content (things) than you will truly become content (full of Joy).
